Two Whitin Community Center Youth Basketball Teams win their Championships!
Dave Scichilone, Athletic Director for the Whitin Community Center, is pleased to announce that two teams from the Whitin Community Center travel youth basketball program were crowned champions of their age groups on Sunday, March 5, 2007!
The teams participate in the South Central Massachusetts Youth Basketball League (SCMYBL). The 8th grade girls’ team, coached by John Doldoorian, dominated their division throughout the season, ending the season undefeated. They went on to beat Auburn and Westboro on their way to victory in the championship game against Southboro. The team included Chelsey Clark, Rachel Clasby, Ashley Dawson, Keri Doldoorian, Giana Fournier, Amanda Harrington, Sarah Phelan, Katelyn Pryor, Courtney Rusenlund, Jordan Thompson, and Haley Young.
The 6th grade boys’ team, coached by Glenn O’Donnell, have been waiting for this championship for 2 years. As 4th graders and 5th graders, this team made it to the championship game each year but were runners-up both times. In the regular season this year, they only lost twice, but to the same teams they would face in the playoffs. In the semi-finals, they beat Hopedale in a hard fought game that was won with only seconds left in the game. In the Championship game, they beat Southboro to finally become the champions. The third time was the charm! The team included Tanner Ropiak, Erick Foglio, Daiton LaChapelle, Matthew Phelan, Grant Brown, Dan Mantoni, Nick Clark, Dan Clasby, Nick Meadows, Ben O’Donnell, and Jake Ryan.
Athletic Director Dave Scichilone, remarked, “We are extremely proud of both teams. Both teams were coached well, showed great sportsmanship, and worked very hard to win their respective championships. We also want to say congratulations to all the players who participated in the travel basketball program this year! It was a great season.”
In 2004, the Whitin Community Center took over the Northbridge Youth Travel league. Since that time, the Community Center has fielded more than a dozen boys and girls teams from 4th to 8th grade with players who are members of the center and/or from Northbridge. The season starts in December and ends in March. Try-outs are held in early November.
