Check out a Family Contra Dance at the Whitin Community Center!
The Whitin Community Center is hosting its first Family Contra Dance on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 7:00 pm in our gymnasium. The cost is Full Members: $4.00 per person or $10.00 for family; Non-Members: $7.00 per person or $18.00 for family.
At a Contra Dance, a caller, working with a group of live musicians, guides new and experienced dancers alike through a variety of dances.
The caller teaches each dance before it is actually done to the music. This gives everyone an idea of what to expect so the movements can be easily executed. The caller leads the dances while they are being done to music, so dancers are able to perform each movement to the music. Once the dancers appear to have mastered a particular dance, the caller may stop calling, leaving the dancers to enjoy the movement with music alone.
Family Contra Dances are designed specifically for participation by the whole family. In addition to dancing, the caller will also initiate other activities such as games and singing, and singing games, and dances with singing.
The caller for this event will be the talented Lisa Greenleaf http://www.contracorners.com/oldfest/lisa.html). The band is The Groovemongers (http://www.groovemongers.com/) who travel around the US and Canada: Rebecca McCallum will be on fiddle, CW Abbott will be on the mandolin & guitar, and Jane Knoeck will be on the piano.
Join us in this unique event! You will be part of a living tradition passed on by the experienced dancers. For more information, contact Deb Hudgins at 508-234-8184.
