HANNAFORD PREPARES FRUIT SALAD AT ROCKDALE YOUTH CENTER

Do you know which fruit Dice-K would refer to as a gooseberry? The children at the Whitin Community Center’s Rockdale Youth Center can tell you that it is a kiwi after a visit from associates at the Uxbridge Hannaford Supermarket on April 12, 2007.

As part of the Survival Cooking program partnership between Hannaford Supermarkets and the Whitin Community Center’s Rockdale Youth Center, Produce Department Manager, Jim Giro, and Sandy Donnelly, Associate Relationship Manager, for the Uxbridge store visited approximately 26 children and taught them about various fruits used to make fruit salad.

Children were shown how to identify fruits, how to determine ripeness, and some interesting facts about different fruits. For instance, they learned that pineapple in season right now comes from Costa Rica and that it is always ripe. In addition, they were introduced to a new fruit, the pepino melon. A pepino melon smells like a pumpkin but has a cucumber-type of consistency on the inside and its seeds are edible.

The Survival Cooking program is designed to teach safety precautions and simple meal planning that is nutritious to children at the Rockdale Youth Center. The center is an after school activity and homework help center for children ages 8 – 13 located in the Rockdale section of Northbridge, MA. The center is open from 2:30-6:00 PM on school days, 12:00-6:00 PM on no school days and half-days. The program provides a safe and nurturing place for children to go when school is not in session and parents are working. The enrichment program meets once a week for one-hour sessions at the Youth Center under the supervision of Assistant Outreach Director, Kristy Gaska. Hannaford Supermarkets donated $1,000 to purchase the food for these sessions.

The children at the Rockdale Youth Center look forward to more visits from the Uxbridge Hannaford as they learn more about eating healthy.
